  6. The difference, as you know, is that university students in 1968 were trying to open and expand free speech and multiple opportunities for alll willing to work for it. Today, cancel cultuure colleges claim free speach by proclaiming what cannnot be said by anyone outside their specific group. Our generation battled against segregation, while today young people for some reason are wanting segregation under a false narrative of personal identity. Then by reputation they moved into suburban America. They sell with the clams of being patriotic and buy products from China for consumers. Don't even get me started on how they treat employees. I have not shopped there in years. I would rather pay a dollar more and support local retail. Sorry Ken.   23. Oh my, I remember when divorce was a scandal not even talked about in front of children. You are correct, David, it was not invented in the 1960s. When my first marrriage (in all fairness neither she nor I were right for one another and basically wed under per pressrure) failed by 1977 I remember my mother thought I had brought such shame on the famiy. Fortunately, once I found the love of my life and married her in 1994 my mother and my new bride became very close and remained so until mom passed in 2018. The take-away from this film that rings true for me is, yes, get to know one another, be sure you are compatable, share the same moral and/or spiritual values, hold realistic expectations, and be sure you are willing to take seriously those vows. I learned with my wife of today that true love means I am more concerned about her well being than my comfort. I know she believes the same the other way around. Good film, as usual, David. As a child I never understood why my friend who lived across a common field and I could play together after school and all weekend, we even would have our mommas make Saturday lunches for us at one another's house. In fact I learned years later as an adult that my mom, her mother and aunt passed as white (being mixed) but never talked about it. The life of Jutka Goz is considered "questionable" in some regards by many Americans, but you and I know out of our common sense and world history, there was probably so much more to her story than you caught in this very full interview. We far too often forget that elder, seasoned citizens, had "real lives" before becoming as seen in contemporary eyes later in life. Just this morning, I was telling my granddaughter of my grandmother who was only 19 (the age my granddaughter headed to college is today). Oh-my-gosh, I thought, I am talking with a person experiencing a global event from the perspective of a woman I remember as being "old". I wonder, what will this bright young lady will experience and become by the times she is in her 80s? I pray only the best, but now I'm becoming one of those "seasoned citizens" who knows better.   60. I agree with Robert Dallek's overview. It took me many years to realize and understand the generational mindsets of both Johnson and Nixon, and in time appreciate them for what they were. Simply put that was one of those divides between the WWII generation and we baby boomers. Vietnam (probably even Korea) were places that did not need our presence. But the past is the past. Yes, President Nixon ultimately did get us out. It was the South Vietnamese who were overrun by the communists in April 1975.   61. Oh man yes I remember. I can even recall my dad telling those riding with him after seatbelts became standard equipment, "Oh, don't worry about those damn things." I remember people agruing well into the 1970s, "I don't want to be trapped in a wrecked car. want to be thrown clear of the crash." I don't remember thinking of it as government intrustion.   74. It seems strange to hit the "like" button on this, expecially after our 46-year-old daughter died Dec. 30, 2022 from a drug and alcohol overdose. I remember walking some of those streets as a young reporter, seeing the skid row "bums" of the 1970s in almost any city across the country. Then, like you David, I observed, spoke with, and interviewed those strung out on booze, acid, heroin, etc. Some were simply addicts for any number of unknown reasons. Then there was that one man in 1977 (probably representative of many) who was there after losing a corporate management position. His wife dumped him and left with the kids. He just gave up. It seemed so easy back then to feel sorry for some, and be judgemental of others. Fifty years later, and after more personal life experience, one realizes all were (and continue half a cenury later) to be lost souls. I'm not being jdgemntal. I don't want to let anyone off easy with simlpistic excuses. It is so easy to faind fault. The old saing rings true, "There but by the grace of God go I" (John Bradford, circa 1510–1555). It ultimately (especially in 2023 with so many resources available) is a matter of lifstyle choices. Thanks for lettig me ramble, David and anone else who may have read this far. It is my long way to tell you good job in capturing historic and contempory truths on film, and telling the sad story in just a couple of minutes.

  75. Wow, this takes me back. As you know my wife worked at one of the AT&T midwest centers testing technology while still operating on "old" systems. What a mess. At the same time I was blessed to have the news service I worked with --- relaying between local affiliates and networks --- innstall an at home studio where I could use the telephone line to send material. It was called entering the World Wide Web. I was told it was just like using the AP or UPI services (both of which I was familiar) but without a big industrial dish. Just log in, hear "bong, bong, sssssssssssssssssh" and it would connect. Then I could enter my reports. Man, we've come a long way in less than three decades. Thanks for sharng this David.   103. I have never known any career military personnel that desired war. That said I still feel that just because Saddam moved WMDs to Syria, U.S. President George W. Bush was wrongly tagged as a war monger and privileged kid playing for power. Iraq and Afghanistan were both wars prolonged beyond need. I also think attempts of culture building is an error, especially in part of the world without Western mindsets. Yet the real war on terror persists in global reality. I have a favorite nephew that still suffers PTSD from an incident while in Iraq, but he served his nation with honor. I am confident I will receive hateful replies from those wanting to show their ignorance and lack of knowing behind the scenes of media prejudice.   106. I remeber as a young conservative "Youth for Nixon". I went to few pot parties. Until I saw a very smart liberal friend, on of my best friends at the time, get a joint laced with LSD. Yes, he tripped out. I though "That's not Ron." It frightened me and I never again got near any drugs. In all fairness I smoked cigars until two yers ago. Yes, we knew there were extremists on both sides, but for the most part conservatives and liberals could intermix with no issues. I suspect a lot depeded where you went to college. Plus was an older student than most. In my case undergrad work came off and on between working assignments. I hope younger viewers can learn from both perspectives.   197. The 1960s definately was a time of change. One which can be explained and explored from many angles. A friend and I were discussing this once. We realized the things we took for granted in the 1950s -- post WWII -- up until November 1963 and thought as "normal." The post WWII era saw strong economic growth experienced by many who came from humble roots. At the same time it carried prejudice and poverty that was a carryover from WWI. It was on a slow boil in a pressurre cooker. I believe it can be sai that the begining of that decade and the ending were two worlds. Some try to compare it to today. No. These are two entirely different things. As always, I appreciate you presenting the history we lived. I just pray we all would finally learn from it. Thanks David. You help keep my mind working.

Although I never met him, I remember Hedrick Smith, and along with others of my professional peers, used him among several legendary (older cousin) examples in repotig news and conducting feature stories during our careers. I was among the final generation of shoe leather and combat boot reporters he mentions. The best tool I had in coducting fair reporting was genuinely listening to both sides and accurately without prejudice reporting what they had to say. The best compliment I ever received was that I respected people, no matter who they were, as I covered folks from the most affluent to the greatest impoverished. I have covered news in person, in combat areas -- an officer once quippped to me, "Hell, all you have to shoot is a camera" -- to the suit and tie experiences of corporate news conferences, legal venues and major political interviews. I consider myself blessed with opportunity and experience. Hedrick Smith is correct, news as what we today have come know with the catch phrase "real news" comes from actually being present among the action. Not just writing what you see on the Internet or remaking something off a news wire. We need to get back to having news reporters eat the same dirt as real people on the ground of real life. Elitism "journalism" is an insult to hard working old time newsmen like Hedrick Smith and even me (and some great newswomen) who hit the streets and were sweating in the field every day (even without a byline) to not boost their images, but serve the communities where they lived and the nation as a whole.

I see young veterans with missing limbs and remember that as recent as Vietnam they would have never survived what I've seen happened to others. Attitude? It has been more than a decade now that I have lived under and with the slow advancement of vanishing white matter in my brain and the corresponding physical and cognitive restrictions. Neuroscientists (I think I once told you I am now a research subject) tell me they have no idea how I am still living. I am a miracle and may offer help to someone in the future. Attitude? That goes with quality of life. Sure, I cannot do many of the things I once loved to do, but I've discovered other things I would never have considered. I'm even accepting online communications. Attitude? I want to contribute to your opening. In my experience we are spiritual beings living inside this shell we call a body with an everlasting soul. What we do with all those elements with which we are created is ultimately up to us. Upon my diagnoses my son told me "Make it work for you." My wife and love of my life makes this transition so easy when I consider what could be. Attitude? I genuinely believe God has given us free will to make our lives what they become. Attitude? One of my highlights is being able to comment on your fine films and commentary. Thank you for the oppotunity on such a public platform. Attitude? Simple.   303. Hi David. As you know I've mentioned many times how we came of age during an amazing period. There is one element I just recently relized that makes the 1960s different from today. Back then, at least among the differing sides of opinion I encountered, both sides loved America. Today it apppears clear that opposing sides either love or hate America. Back then both sides wanted to see improvements as we entered the second half of the 20th century, but differed in how to approach issues and moral objectives. Today it is even more divided but it is a matter of those that want to improve America as we move onward into the 21st century and those that want to overthrow and abolish America. Most westerners do not fully comprehend the Sunni and Shi'a conflicts over centuries. A friend tried to explain them to me and I asked in his family which is he. His answer? Both.   330. Unfortunately election fraud is nothing new. I just think in the technology age it is easier to commit and with an onslaught of news (or alleged news) outlets more people are aware of it. I remember once making that point by asking select people in Oklahoma and Texas if they were aware of the coal mine strikes and riots of the 1930s. None were, but they had their own local issues. As usual a fine and timely report. Thank you. Added: I never had trouble showing a deriver's license, and now a citizen i.d. that I also received at the DMV although I am unable to drive. I have a wife and friends to take me to the polls, plus plenty of organizations offer rides. The most important thing we can do is research those on the ballot and do not vote based on what you see on T.V. or the Internet. I remember my first time voting and paper ballots were used and verified. Results were tabulated far quicker too.

I'm fortunate in that my mother-in-law was a child (aged 5 through teenages) during the war in Germany and willing told of the hardships she and her family exprience not only during the war, but afterward. Her family was among those living after the war in the Soviet sector of East Germany. She was a hero in escaping to the west and thankfully for me had a beautiful daughter who became my bride. My wife says she does not remember the reconstructing, but both appreciates her heritage as well as being a proud U.S. citizen.
