I’ve managed and owned bars, raising alcohol tax repeatedly and reducing opening hours is the reason we have a bad drinking culture in this country.
When the government implemented 3am lockout, we started having issues at 3am, instead of people filtering out when they were done, we push them onto the street at the same time, overload the food stalls, overload the taxi lines, overload security / police, and violence ensues.
The government in their brilliance, and through advice of people who have never spent a day in the industry, decided since the problems were happening at 3, closing at 1 would fix it. Now people fight at 1am instead of 3, and have a lot more energy left to do so.
As for actual consumption of alcohol. Driving prices up doesn’t reduce consumption, it results in rapid consumption before going out to a venue. Instead of spending 6-8 hours in a venue, where staff can monitor consumption and interaction, people are drinking in the park across the road before coming in to go crazy for the last couple hours of opening, then being kicked out at the peak of their intoxication, onto the street with others also at the peak, with nowhere to go.
When a standard drink in a bar costs upwards of $15, and the hourly rate of the average young person isn’t much better, they literally can’t afford to buy a drink, but they still want to go out and have fun. The system fails us all.
