god damn...
but it seems like through selling drugs to americans, they have equal or more resources than the actual mexican government. it's a stalemate, a failed state with areas ruled by local warlords, no different to sudan or the congo. just like syria, where the government's reach only holds a third of the actual land of the country, with the rest occupied by warlords and other factions. that's not to say the officially recognized government is necessarily any better, in many cases they are in a sense just warlords who gained legitimacy. mexico is no longer just one country, but several, all warring over borders, while women and children are killed in the crossfire.
what can be done to fix this problem? honestly, legalizing drugs would be the best step, like portugal, where instead of jailing people for drugs, we give them treatment. it will cut off the funding from all these cartels using drug smuggling as their source of finance, and allow a single government to control the nation peacefully. that is, if the government can be trusted to run the country at all. in a lot of cases, they can't. i'm not speaking of mexico specifically, but just in general.
