upon further investigation of Altosid ( 5:01 ), the active chemical is (S)-methoprene, which is extremely toxic to aquatic wildlife, and prevents all insects that go through a larval stage from maturing past their larval stage. it's primarily used for mosquitoes and flies, but it seems to affect all insects that go through a larval stage. even if it doesn't affect the predatory insects they hope to protect, if you inadvertently kill off all their prey, they will starve. bees go through larval stages, so will also be affected.
i understand the need to get rid of the ants, and i also don't have any better ideas for controlling the problem. but it seems that they may very well be ridding those areas of all insects, and the animals that eat those insects, and the plants that rely on those insects for pollination or nutrient recycling, etc.
while it seems it doesn't have adverse effects on humans, other than skin irritation, it still seems like it might cause just as much damage as the ants themselves, if not more. and runoff into their waters could reduce the fish populations and disrupt entire ecosystems, like the birds that rely on catching ocean fish. it just seems so risky
