It's a positive renewable energy mega-project (not too positive; the majority of solar panels are now made in China, plus manufacturing solar panels is a polluting business). There is more than the environmental costs of making the components. The DC power connector cable runs over much sea and ocean bed which comprise unstable tectonic plate boundaries (especially in Indonesia, which is the majority of the length of it). Seeing that the Bass Strait is much shorter than the proposed route (about 1/10 as long), plus the Bass Straight is not at unstable tectonic plate boundaries, there is a lot that could go wrong with such a long sea cable. Why not put solar panels on pontoon barges at sea, away from shipping lanes, but not far from Singapore? Singapore is near the equator and outside the cyclone zone (within 3 degrees North or South of the equator).
