Fragments of a comet, for example, which had split into hundreds or thousands of fragments when entering the atmosphere would have, most likely caused superheating of the atmosphere via air friction and violent ablation possibly to a few hundred degrees in a few hours or even minutes, which probably would have also caused widespread forest fires. No such event was reported.
