  1. Submarines need to run at shallow deaths to launch missiles, but they don't need to surface. While on war patrol, even a diesel-electric sub snorkels to recharge the battery, it does not surface.

  2. I know the PLAAN carriers are fairly useless, but I always respected the size of the PLAAN destroyer force. However, with electronic warfare and battlefield situation it doesn't come close to the abilities of the Western, Japanese, South Korean, and Taiwanese allies warships, particular in a combined surface ships, submarines and air fleet battlefield awareness situation. It's this lack of combined ability that may make them sitting ducks in a shooting war.
