It is now the standard measure of the power of an explosion, even though TNT is not used much by the military as a chemical explosive anymore. The mass of an aircraft supercarrier is about 100,000 tonnes fully loaded, for example the USS Gerald R Ford. The mass of ten of these carriers equals about a megaton, so the mass of 10 supercarriers in TNT explosive charge alone. Thus, the explosion of 1 megaton of TNT is the equivalent power of a medium sized nuclear weapon.
