  1. Don't forget that the ROC troops under Chiang Kai Shek were severely weakened with battles with the invading Japanese Kwantung army in the 1930s. The Rape of Nanking (a book I have read) was part of this horror, genocide and depravity by the Japanese occupying Nanjing. About 300,000 Nanjing people died in this holocaust that lasted for about 4 months. The weakness of the ROC partially lead to the victory of the CCP in 1949.

  2. This, in the end, is a cultural meme. But educated Chinese should read the works of Confucius or Mencius (sorry, I have only their Latinized names) to understand their cultural roots and ethics and to grasp the Russo-Germanic anti-intellectual, anti-enllightenment sourge which is Marxism-Leninism. While I speak of this, Western philosophy cannot in modernity, completely harken back to the works of Socretes, Aristotle and Plato. The works of these ancient philosphers are not wholesale compliant with the ethics of modernity.
