  2. Why not widen an existing canal (Panama canal). Surely this would cost less. The CCP (sorry every mainland Chinese company IS the CCP) have been strenuously trying to get a contract to build a shorter canal across the Isthmus of Kra in Thailand. This is so cargo ships can stop sailing around the bottom of the island of Sumatra (much further south) but secretly, so the Indian and US navies cannot as easily blockade Chinese ships entering the Indian ocean in the event of war (which seems more and more likely). The Thai government has changed their mind away from this proposal, for now.
