  1. I believe the Old Summer Palace destruction appeared not out of nowhere, but for relaiation for the murder of diplomats that the Qing Dynasty refused to negotiiate over. I believe Gengis Khan destoyed the Persian Empire over the issue of beheading their envoys. Demonstrably worse than burning down the palace of a feudal dynasty in retaliation. It's a mistake to conceptualise your own ills and mistakes over the aggression of outsiders. The important and powerful Kingdom of Siam was able to resist and play off the aggressive Victorian era of European colonial powers. The failure of the Qing Dynasty to be as effective as the Kingdom of Siam is instructive.
