  1. When this Chinese woman talking about her age, she looks young anyway. Dowry (for woman) is a sign of a materially insecure culture. China is exogameous, where a girl leaves her family to join her husbands family in exchange for a dowry. This looks good for women, but in reality is a poor exchange for a woman's value as a human being. It's soft "permanent" prostitution if you think about it. If a woman is rejected, she gets her dowry back, maybe? Modernity in the West demands equal partnership in a couples relationship, where both partners work as a team for a shared future. Romance can play a part like going on a holiday together. Divorce means division of the shared estate (ideally) 50/50. No dowry needed for the woman. Woman are more economically empowered in this system, not less. If children are involved, ideally 50/50 custody tine of them. The kids will be okay with this system. They amacably get to see one parent at least half the time. Reality is that marriage is a feudal idea. Might be good for the family but a poor decision for the individual. Parents be damned.
