  1. The Vietnamese look at current Chinese colonization (from below) of Laos, Cambodia and Mynamar and are determined not to go that way. Because of Vietnam's relatively large size, compared to these other countries, and it's long and cool relationship with China and the CCP (the last country the CCP waged a hot war on and got their asses kicked was Vietnam. This was in 1979), will keep Vietnam at relative arm's length from China by the government at Hanoi. The Vietnamese are generally correct; they treat the other asian powers (Japan, South Korea & Taiwan) and Western countries individually as equal to China. This is a smart move diplomatically.

  2. Nope, it was political theater at it's best. Without declaring war, Xi was humiliated and snubbed by the Vietnamese high officials.You misunderstand the long and strained relationship between Vietnam and China for centuries, because they are both Communists, don't at all like each other. Vietnam was the last country actually military invaded by the CCP in 1979, so no friendship lost there.
