The Taiwan Strait itself is an essential tradewaterway, connecting energy suppilee (petroleum products) fromthe Middle East to Japan and South Korea, so geopolitically, it is very important for these two countries at least. The CCP attempts to obsfuscate this by making nationalist assertions over Taiwan (without any basis since Taiwan is an alternative government of China and the CCP has never controlled it since Chiang Kai-Shek and his Kuomintang government fled to there in 1949). So "reunify" is incorrect, they mean "unite with". The repetititve "Taiwan being reunited with the Motherland:" is a bullshit homiliy by the CCP, as it wants Taiwan and it wastes words for home Nationalist consumption and for trying to get Taiwan without a war that it can't risk fighting for yet. Or else the CCP would not keep rambling on about it, it would take action.
