  1. Marriage is a burdensome tradition, set by the family.and the tribe. Really, it's as mundane as a business contract, and gift giving money seems to be part of the Chinese tradition, but this is darkened by greed and acquisitiveness in modernity. Eventually out-of-control greed and acquisitiveness are bedfellows of social divide and eventually anarchy, revolution and war.

  2. Loosing (or gaining) face is a social disease in China. I can see being an individual is very difficult to achieve with these burdensome traditions, particularly with "face". Pehaps that why "the nail sticks up is always hammered down" (a Japanese saying), and the brilliant Chinese are hindered by this.
