I've wondered if China, a huge and ancient country with it's 23 provinces and CCP over-centralization and mis-rule, could evolve into a federated provinces republic, with more economic autonomy of separate provinces, not to the point of succession, with Beijing (or a selected capital city) handling national laws and legislature with elected members. It would be a radical turn of government function and form that China currently has (although not to Taiwan). Hence, the transition will not be without setbacks and troubles.
