  1. Rice is a labour intensive grain growth, in comparison to wheat and maise. For example, young rice plants need to be planted by hand in a paddy, whereas wheat and maize can be sowed by spreading seeds on ploughed ground. This sowing can be done mechanically. Perhaps rice can be planted mechancially, but most Chinese farmers cannot afford this kind of machinery.
