Well, geopolitically, being an island archipelago nation, Japan has to defend sea lanes and air spaces to prevent blockade by a hostile power, if it wants to remain economically active. Also, Japan is Taiwan's second closest neighbour (after China), so the political and military disposition of Taiwan, under a democratic government currently friendly to Japan there, is vital to Japan's foreign relations, economic engagement and geopolitical interests. All these align for Japan in Taiwan's case, so it is likely that Japan will intervene if Taiwan is invaded by the PLA. The CCP is ramping up Japan bashing propaganda and hysteria whenever it feels disadvantaged by it's own totalitarian aggression in the Taiwan straight, so expect more of this unedifying spectacle as Xi Jinping sabre rattling about the fate of Taiwan.
