I understood Tibet to be largely an alpine desert. The very fact that the Tibetan plateau is the headwaters to so many Asian rivers to the South and East makes it of very great strategic interest to the Indians (and the Chinese) for example. The Ganges is a sacred river to the Indians. Now I understand the CCP's and India's hostility toward each other over the "actual line of control" in Western Tibet border, is partly exacerbated by this (the other is the CCP's support of Pakistan). India was disorganized at the time the CCP troops invaded Tibet in the 1950s, the pendulum may be swinging back now. Tibet is now a flashpoint and a potential battleground in an international war that the CCP seems increasingly intent in fighting (the CCP is waging a clandestine cyber and espionage war with the US for decades; finally the Yanks are waking up to this). Potentially losing Tibet to India (which the Tibetans hope will happen as an act of liberation), is a real risk to the CCP's grip on it.
