Scots seemingly have been and are a more outward looking people in Britain than the English for example. Partly meaning, like Celtic wanderers, they go places other than their homeland of Scotland seeking adventure and fortune. For example, at my outback workplace in Australia, out of roughly 30 to 40 people working there two are Scottish. Also Scottish intellectualism has mostly been in advance of England (other than Oxford and Cambridge). The Scottish Enlightenment movement in the eighteenth century brought forth intellectuals like David Hume and James Hutton. Hume travelled extensively to France to meet with his philisophical peers. This in parallel with engineers like James Watt, who had important input into the early industrial revolution started in Britain. So historically, Scotland has always punched above it's weight.
