South Australians are "Crow Eaters", because of the hardship of the early settlers of this mainly desert state (think of Arizona only drier), and Western Australians are called "Sand Gropers" because Perth is built on a vast infertile sand plain. Perth.got off to a difficult start before the 1960s (despite being colonized in 1829), now the richest (in average GDP per capita) state capital other than Canberra.
