The actually most dangerous (large) animal in Australia, other than Homo sapiens, is another two-legged one which is on the coat-of-arms for Australia; the kangaroo. While the males may actually occasionally attack you in parks in Canberra, especially when you're out walking you dog. The real hazard of these animals is night time driving in the country. Hitting a kangaroo is similar to hitting a deer in North America, but worse, because kangaroos are real stupid as far as traffic is concerned. They bound towards the vehicle, instead of away from it in many occasions, and become responsible for many lethal road accidents on country roads.

Have you heard about the bloke who got bitten by a centipede when it got into his swag at the Pilbara (Western Australia)? Why he had his swag on the ground and not a strecher is another story. That sounds bad, but it actually turns out that it was good, because this bloke suffered terribly from arthritis as well, and when the pain and swelling of the bite had gone done, found that the centipede's venom had largely cured him of his arthritis (please don't try this at home).

Queensland is awesome. Avoid the cassowaries though if you're lucky enough to meet one. They can rush up and attack you with their extremely powerful legs and talons and unlike the magpies (which are annoying), can actually rip you open.
