This being said, Communism did not arise in Vietnam by accident. A century of corrupt and greedy colonial rule by the French and then an ignorant, cynical and destructive crusade by the Americans firmly put the Vietnamese into the camp of socialist totalitarianism, because they believed that this would bring lasting independence to their country by having an ideological program for kicking out the white colonisers and to ideologically align themselves with the continually tricky and aquisitive Chinese (the Chinese invaded Vietnam 26 times over 2000 years which is pathological, even by Roman standards). None of this (except kicking out the whites) really politically worked. To make matters more vexing was the Vietnamese only really wanted to be left alone from the start. They had paid an enormous price for their independence in many ways, but they got it.
