  1. Turning plowshares into guns (or missiles) improves your defence; it does not improve your economic situation. War spends (mostly) taxpayers money. It does not make money like trade, manufacturing, services, tourism etc. Services are only war services. It is still taxpayer funded. War spending (on expensive warships, warplanes etc) defends your economic goods trade which does help your economy. On the other hand, occupying countries costs money. The winter of Northern Germany while occupied by the British army in 1945-46, risked mass starvation for the population there for example.

  2. It was a wonder than Britain and other European states in general were able to get out of the hole that Feudalism created for a 1000 years. Oh yeah, global shipping trading and colonies. Plus, trade libralization (something Spain, Portugual and to a lesser degree France didn't initially have).

  3. Tik is bored talking about just World War 2 battles and generals. He is correct in examining the politics of that era. After all, war is a political act.
