  3. Intresting logic, particularly with Trotsky. Jews in Europe for centuries were not allowed to own land or be members of the artistocracy. In the close-fisted quasi-feudal societies of pre-industrial Europe, this gave basically one path for weathy Jews wishing to put their wealth and influence to use; banking. In a sense, before the twentieth century,Jews were a victim of the religiously xenophobic societies they found themselves in. By making wealth and influence through the institutions of usury (banking), and by having a different faith (not recognizing Jesus as the redeemer of mankind mythology for example), they invited to be despised, and sometimes persecuted in witch-hunts. This is a perfectly fertile soil for the paradigm of the martyr and altruist.
