This debate could go.on for another century. Yet, Tik's statements leading from the invasion of Poland by the Wehrmacht in September 1939 is factually correct (unless you are a pro-Nazi crank) and I've heard Chamberlain's BBC radio recording in response to Germany's invasion of Poland. Chamberlain made an official statement that Germany had invaded Poland which violated an alliance that Britain had made with Poland. Hence, Britain was at war with Germany because Germany had not halted the invasion. This is a declaration of alliance support, not an official ultimatum of war declaration. The French government had a similar position as the British, but their declaration of support of a Poland alliance they had by declaring war did not expire until about 5 hours after the British. The Nazi German government and Hitler ignored both deadlines and created war with two powerful Western European states as a result. Something similar happened when Belgium was invaded in 1914 by Germany as well. Belgium was neutral and the treaty of Westphalia guaranteed her neutrality by the signatories
