  2. Sorry, forgot to add in Native Americans. It was their land before the (principally) Europeans arrived on a colonizing mission of various degrees of rapine, war, slavery, germ warfare, genocide including cultural, racism and dispossession. The 5 nations of the Iroquois Confederacy deserves a mention as well as the more unfriendly Aztec Empire, and so on.
