The Ford class aircraft carrier (powerful, impressive and expensive though this ship is), is vulnerable to being sunk by a single torpedo from a submarine. I've done the statistics from the time that submarines were considerably less potent (as an armed long duty fully submersible stealthy warship) than they are now, i.e. during the Pacific war (1941-45), the Japanese lost 20 carriers (of various grades) in action. Fully 40% of these were sunk by submarines (or delivered the coup de grace by them). Even if the IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy) were not noted for their abilities for antisubmarine warfare at this time, this sober fact makes fleet carriers (such as the USS Gerald R. Ford), still very vulnerable to being sunk by submarines.
