While I agree with Neill's geopolitical analysis that, for all intents and purposes, this is Cold War 2 with CCP China (don't forget that the Taiwanese were and are aspirational for their control of China as they are the legacy of the Chinese Nationalists or Kuomintang, originally under Chiang Kai-shek), I disagree that the defence of Australia will be enhanced by the acquisition of these extremely expensive vessels. The 368 billion (Australian) dollars to be spent acquiring these vessels is neither prudent nor calculated. There are other less expensive and more timely methods of affecting a long-range strike on PLAPN ships or aircraft intent on invading or interdicting the seas North of Australia. For example, a squadron of overall less expensive B-21 Raider stealth bombers can just as easily sink ships under stealth mode (as a nuclear attack submarine would), and affect a wider range of long-range stealth strike missions that could be carried out by a nuclear submarine, and do it repeatedly and within hours of target detection. The acquisition of these vessels apparently will take as long or longer than the development and purchase of the B-21 Raider.
