It's interesting that the first flying aircraft (the Ingenuity) on another planet was a counter-rotating helicopter (helicopters are difficult machines to control in flight compared to airplanes), but understandable considering it's VTOL application in very thin atmosphere (with helpful low gravity), which is difficult to achieve with fixed winged aircraft (just look at the number of accidents with Bell Boeing V22 Osprey). Anyway, overall the flight program was an outstanding success and an enormous amount of flight data (as well as Mars land surface and atmosphere composition) has been collected by Ingenuity. This will enable aircraft designers and flight engineers to significantly improve on the next flight mission aircraft on Mars. I hope that the next atmospheric flight on Mars might be an aircraft of fixed wing design, which would go down in the annals of first flying machines in the atmosphere of another planet (other than Earth) as well. Seventy one small flights of an exo-atmosphere aircraft; one giant leap for exo-atmosphere aircraft kind.
