Flight is not neccessary. Think of ratites (flightless birds). Yes, I like birds enormously and admire their intelligence, activity in their habitats, speed and birdsong. Even in the desert you will find many birds. They are adaptive, hardy vertebrate Sauropsids.

Has anyone thought re, water on Earth: 1. Very early forming Earth formed further out from the sun than thought, then the early earth migrated towards the sun, 2. The very early sun was cooler than it is now, allowing ice in the Earth's current orbit, 3. Earth has significant water in the mantle, partly due to mineral formation there (now significantly extruded via volcanic eruptions). 4. Estatite is a significant mineral in the upper mantle and crust of the Earth.

To say that ants going into large colonies is an evolutionary advantage is debatable. Their are many successful species of ants in Australia that don't live in large colonies. For example the large but solatary inch ant, Myrmecia pyriformis (forages alone but lives in small colonies), where the female workers can reach nearly an inch long. The bite or sting of this ant however, can be fatal (venom similar to bees and wasps; can cause anaphylactic shock in the human victim). It is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most dangerous (individual) ant.

What makes a bird? Flight? THis answer is incorrect. You forgot the giant moa (quite recently extinct), ostrich, cassowary and many more. Fairly successful flightless birds called ratites which use running speed and leg talon power to survive. What makes a bird are feathers, a bill or beak, hard shell egg laying and parental incubation and singing (particularly with passerines). Birds are highly successful land and sea terrestrial vertebrates. Few places on the surface of the Earth (or under the water near the Antarctic, i.e. penguins) can you not find a bird.
