  1. To say that ants going into large colonies is an evolutionary advantage is debatable. Their are many successful species of ants in Australia that don't live in large colonies. For example the large but solatary inch ant, Myrmecia pyriformis (forages alone but lives in small colonies), where the female workers can reach nearly an inch long. The bite or sting of this ant however, can be fatal (venom similar to bees and wasps; can cause anaphylactic shock in the human victim). It is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most dangerous (individual) ant.
