A lot of people want to know - WRX or Elantra N? It's a tough one! Ultimately it boils down to how you're going to use the car and what you can find at MSRP, but here are my thoughts:
-WRX For AWD & Winter fun. Fantastic Manual. Perfect for rallycross, ice racing, does ok on track with modifications (brakes, cooling). If you want a CVT WRX, I'd get an Outback Wilderness instead, just as fast but with more usability/off-road capability. Could use an exhaust, better brakes. Wouldn't mess with power too much, factory tune is fantastic (and more reliable). More fun in the winter.
-Elantra N if you're doing track days and want serious all-round performance right out of the factory. Manual is fantastic with some shifter bushings, DCT is also really good, but has a recall right now. Elantra N feels better built and higher quality than WRX, tech is great too. All the exhaust, suspension tuning, brake cooling, etc. adjustability you'd want without having to go to the aftermarket. Less fun in the winter, more fun the rest of the time.
Both look weird.
Both have handbrakes.
Both you'll love to drive.

Highlight of the week in the Dark Horse: I wanted to switch the exhaust into quiet mode leaving the neighborhoodā¦hit the menu button in my driveway and it took UNTIL I HAD LEFT THE NEIGHBORHOOD for the exhaust menu to load. Truly a menace, the new Mustang.
I never really gave a conclusion in this video, so here it is - there are some notable improvements here with the Dark Horse. Steering is tighter and more responsive and gearbox tuning is a lot better on the 10-speed auto. Canāt wait to drive the 6MT Tremec TR 3160. Performance here is next level for a Mustang, weāll have to get this out on track where we can truly explore the limits, cause it aināt happening on the street!
Now onto the rest - The screens look pretty badass at night, and definitely bring a cool modern feel to the interior. The menus, gauges, and animations are all really well designed and are beautiful to look at imo. I'm sure Ford will fix some of this with OTA updates but we experienced a lot of bugs with this car in the week we had it. Adaptive cruise control not wanting to work, exhaust modes not changing, proximity key settings absent in the menus that are in other Ford products (car would auto lock/beep every time after walking away and couldn't turn it off), and the worst of which was the touch screen that sometimes froze for 15-30 seconds when making menu selections. Sometimes the screen response was great, sometimes it was abysmally laggy.
Interior materials have never been the Mustang's strong suit, but for the price tag here all the plastic (everything) is a hard swallow. C'mon Ford, you're calling it the Dark Horse "Premium" make us believe it. Alcantara wheel? Magnesium paddle shifters? Real carbon fiber? A lot of interior rattles too. Though these press cars are driven very hard.
In the end, some of this could be chalked up to it being a pre-production car (not sure, we just assume most of Ford's press vehicles are pre-production with all the rattles they have), so time will tell if other cars show the same faults. The new Dark Horse drives awesome, but the devil is in the details.

Update after our week with the car.
Key card/fob continues to be a complete nightmare. Substitute Topher just spent 15 minutes trying to get the car to unlock, gave up. We were about to text the fleet company that the car was bricked when we tried one more time 10 minutes later it opened up and worked fine. I realize there's a digital key, but It's 2025 and this is basic stuff that should work. Same thing happened to me earlier this week but I got it to open after only a minute of trying. You shouldnāt need an app to get into your car.
I hope there's a fix for the air gap in the driver's window seal. Not sure how well it came through in this video, but it sounds like there's a window cracked open while driving. Other owners reported the same issue on forums, most seem to have gotten it resolved.
Couldn't film a Winding Road night drive on the car this week due to an intermittent headlight error. Brought back old memories of my mom's 2002 S60.
Reverse Camera is still a coin flip between full screen 360 cam and split screen w/the reverse camera. Having to tap the screen to access the reverse camera while in reverse was distracting/dangerous in multiple instances during our week with the car. Camera quality is excellent though. You need it because visibility looking back isnāt great.
Driving dynamics continue to impress. Tons of grip, good chassis balance, but 22" wheels and wide performance tires decimate any driving range this would otherwise have with a 111 kwh battery.
Air suspension (?) is constantly adjusting and making noise at low speeds.
There's a lot to like about the way it drives, looks and feels...lease deals are even compelling. But for me, the positives are completely eclipsed by the fact that everything is so needlessly oversimplified and difficult to operate. I can live with the window switches but the steering wheel controls are just straight up annoying. Still, Iām sure youād get used to them with use and time. At least the screen feels like it is from this decade. Super responsive and pretty well designed with minimal inputs between menus. Still would be nice to have some more buttons in the car for frequently used functions. I appreciate form over function but this takes it too far and becomes a safety concern imo. Until cars can drive themselves this shouldnāt be the case.
A couple of the issues we experienced are most likely specific to this car. Hopefully Polestar will address some of these in their future models/updates. I'm rooting for them, but I hope they read the room on some of this stuff.

A couple questions I didn't cover in the video - Yes, you can opt out of the drilled access holes, but you'd be missing out on the most important long-term benefit of this rust proofing (and the Krown warranty https://www.krown.com/en/warranty/). The guys at Daily Motor were parting out a few cars this summer and I'm kicking myself for not taking photos of all the rust inside the doors, behind the fenders, etc. These were Michigan-driven cars that were rotting extensively from the inside out but still ran and drove great. You can't see a lot of this happening until it's too late, but the areas that are sprayed through these access holes are just as important as the underside, suspension components, etc.
The holes wouldn't void any manufacturer "warranty" unless they become a source of rust, but Krown treats them and the rubber caps with a heavier compound to ensure they don't rust. Also since these holes are drilled behind door seals, trunk seals, etc, they don't see much moisture or exposure to the elements. Hope that helps!

I think about this all the time lol. The 86/BRZ is honestly one of the last pure raw driverās cars on the market, and Iāve often thought that if I had to replace it, Iād just get another newer one.
My favorite thing about it has always been that I donāt feel like I have to baby it. I think thereās a freedom and enjoyment there that may be absent in more expensive cars. You already have a Type R, thatād be my next suggestion. But beyond looking at another new 86 or BRZ (the performance package cars are the sweet spot imo) next on my list would be a Challenger Scatpack Widebody. Different beasts, but I love that thing. Theyāre awesome on the track and make for really entertaining daily drivers. They can take a beating too. It drives like a big Miata. Alternatively, the Alfa Romeo 4C is about as raw as it gets, but unfortunately witout a manual. The manual steering makes up for it though... Alfa is rolling out a CPO program too.
I donāt know why Iām not more excited about the new Miata. If I wanted another one Iād just get a PRHT NC2 and set it up as a big grip car for half the cost of a new ND. The Camaro ZL1 is a good option too, but havenāt driven any of the new ones except for an SS, and I vastly prefer the challenger. The new Mustang is numb, the GT350 is good, but Is probably a ticking time bomb if you drive it hard. Honestly itās either 86 or 911 GT3 lol.

Completely forgot to mention that CVT WRXs have a different AWD system from the manual cars - Active All-Wheel Drive that changes torque split depending on driver input. Didnāt notice much of a difference in the real world between the two AWD setups, Iāve found Subaruās active AWD to work great in the snow etc. on other CVT models Iāve tested.
Hereās the best explanation I could find on it, from Subaru:
An electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch actively manages power distribution and ensures that the wheels with the best traction receive more power. Power transfer is governed by slippage in the clutch plates. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) controls the multi-plate transfer clutch. Active All-Wheel Drive can adjust the power split in an instant, depending on many input factors. If the front wheels begin to slip, the TCM increases hydraulic pressure on the transfer clutch, reducing slippage of the plates and transferring the power to the rear wheels. As the front wheels regain traction, the TCM reduces pressure on the clutch, increasing slippage of the plates and transferring power to the front. The TCM monitors input from speed sensors on the front and rear drive shafts and also takes input from the throttle position and the transmission. All of these factors cause the TCM to select a software strategy that determines how aggressively it adjusts the power distribution. Active All-Wheel Drive varies the power distribution according to driving conditions. When throttle input signals acceleration, the system responds by transferring more power to the rear wheels to account for rearward weight transfer. When releasing the throttle indicates deceleration, power transfers to the front wheels to enhance braking performance. The system enhances cornering performance as well. When the driver lifts off the throttle and applies the brake to enter a turn, power transfers to the front wheels for greater steering control. As the car exits the turn and accelerates, power transfers to the rear wheels for added traction.

Thanks for the comment - I can only speak to my experience with this car and the Dark Horse I filmed earlier this year at Road America. Both cars had moments where screen response time was completely fine, and other times were way too slow and laggy. Itās inconsistent, and you can see this in my Road America walkaround video first hand. I didnāt get it on camera this week, but multiple times with this DH, the infotainment froze for 10-20 seconds trying to load a menu. Also regularly got locked out of changing exhaust modes for some reason. Iām sure Ford can fix a lot of this with software updates and long term it wonāt be as big of a deal. But on first impressions I havenāt been impressed with these new screens.
Thatās fair with normal vs. sport mode, but I donāt think itās unreasonable to want more intelligent and adaptive transmission programming based on driving inputs, irrespective of drive mode - especially since this is a flagship high performance car. A lot of manufacturers do this with varying degrees of success to even their most mundane passenger cars, just a note. The solution is just switch to sport mode.
Re: paddle shifters- thatās great, but they still feel cheap imo. Especially compared to the Magnesium paddles on the GT500 and Raptors, which are about as good as it gets. Iām sure thatās an easy aftermarket upgrade.
Iād like to blame a lot of the issues I had on this being an early production prototype but I have no way of knowing if thatās true. Many oems label their press cars as āpre-productionā and we give them a little bit of slack. But I have to assume this is full production unless otherwise noted. Hopefully customer cars have fewer rattles and some of the bugs get worked out with software updates. Because youāre right, this drives awesome. Itās sharper and more dialed in than the Mach 1, I didnāt say anything to the contrary. For $75k though, they need to get more than just the driving experience right.
