Another is that they are located on the outer walls of the building and their warm side is outside. Thirdly, the temperature in the store where people walk around may be a bit cool for comfort, to reduce loss from the food coolers.

  16. I live in the US and I often see the cabinets for milk, etc. along the outer walls. I have seen freezers grouped in the middle. I suspect that in those cases they run coolant lines to coils on the outside of the building.

  46. In my teen years in Georgia, I had an aerial strung between two trees over the house and I had an old car radio in my room. I'd pick up New Orleans at night. The normal operation of the radio used a vibrator, but I fed it AC, so didn't need the vibrator. There was a gas rectifier for the power supply. It had a glass envelope and a lightweight metal cover. I removed the cover and I'd see that purple glow.
