  1. The best engineers are not working for any company that fields F1 cars, they are applying for work at SpaceX, Tesla, NASA, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Apple, and Google in that order, based on number of employment applications of qualified engineers.

  2. You say that the public doesn't really even have to pay for F1, but it does. Every item that is priced higher because of advertising in F1, every car OEM that fields a team and doesn't break even on it, increases the price of their vehicles etc. It's like any sport, the tax is build in and you don't get a choice: buy a pair of Nikes; you are in part paying the fee for that millionaire baller in the ads, even if you don't watch the sport.
