You miss the evil genius of it: this kid showed initiative, and was charitable, and is a microcosm of the right-wing urge to stop all government funding of programs like food stamps, and ssi, and everything they can, and have the churches and the rich give what they want to whom they want under the conditions they want. Which would be a paltry amount insufficient to make any difference to all but a few chosen recipients who had better damn well be snivelingly grateful. The reality is this: the higher the total worth of an individual the less a percentage of it they give to charity.
