  2. In 1969 my girlfriend and I were returning to our apt from dining out. The route we were taking went through a black section of a small city in PA. I first noticed that many of the windows on the street were smashed. It all happened very quickly. Next I notice that there were cars overturned up ahead on fire. It is a one lane one way street without room to turn around. Next I hear someone scream "whitey!" and a brick hits my windshield right in front of my girlfriend and showers her face with glass. A mob of people started to converge on my car. If it wasn't for a small alleyway that just happened to be right at the left of my car I would have had no way out. I took off down the alley and a mob of people literally collided with each other where I had been a moment before. I drove directly to the police station before I stopped because I didn't know how extensive the riots were. The car I had seen burning in the next block had held an elderly white couple that were pulled out of their car and beaten to death. My girlfriends face was covered in blood but only superficial lacerations. If not for the luck of that alley we would have been dead just because we were white. So I know exactly how it feels to be targeted for no reason but your race. The next year, my freshman year a university, I went with a close black friend to a black power rally. I was the only white person there. I was so abused both by the audience and from the stage that I got up and left, despite being there to support their cause. I guess I told you that so that you could rest assured it is a pan human trait to be brutal. Given the opportunity the oppressed will step right up an oppress others.
