  5.  @luperamos7307  Many people mix up the mujaheddin with the Taliban, but they are not the same. While the mujaheddin were fighting the Soviets, the future Taliban were refugee male children being housed and brainwashed in Saudi sponsored madrassas in Pakistan. When they returned to Afganistan, they initially fought against the remnants of the mujaheddin.

  6. ​ @luperamos7307 The Taliban are religious extremists, but the mujahedin were mostly more like religious fundamentalists. Anyhow they didn't hesitate to kill each other. I can't find any reference to Rumsfeld making any policy decisions regarding the initial incursion of the Taliban into Afghanistan in about 1994. At the time Rumsfeld was a private citizen not a public official. When he did enter public life, his statements portend only to the defeat of terrorism wherever it had its roots. Who can say? Unlike yourself I do not consider myself privy to his private unstated motivations at the time. Although, at first he certainly stated he was opposed to a nation building campaign in Afghanistan and feared the USA would get bogged down like the Russians did.

  9. "We" should not provide it, Saudi Arabia is responsible for the creation of the Taliban, they should provide it.

  15.  James Pritchard  This may seem silly (and it is) but, we went into Afghanistan because George W Bush is an imbecile, and wasn't going to back up one iota on the ultimatum he presented to the Taliban. Even after they offered to do exactly what he demanded in the first place.
