  3. @ What books would you expect to see in a Soviet children's library? There were all of them except sex education. There were books by Russian and Western writers. Of the Western authors, we had books by Jules Verne, Alexandre Dumas, Rudyard Kipling, Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, James Fenimore Cooper, James Herriot, Farley Mowat, etc. These are just some of the books we had at home, that I read and can now remember.

  6. In the USSR, you couldn't be thrown out on the street. In the USSR, there was a criminal article for parasitism (unemployment) and vagrancy (homelessness). Every person had to have some kind of job and housing. The employer or the city could provide housing: a dormitory or an apartment. The problem was to get a good job and a good apartment.

  7. Higher-ranking people lived in better houses and better locations. I think it was possible to get an advantage in getting a better apartment by paying a bribe or by making connections. Perhaps larger families moved into larger apartments. Or someone was just lucky. It happened that some people were in the right place at the right time and got an advantage.
