  1. Here’s a fact: the French army threatened to execute anyone who took part in temporary truces like this. Also, not surprisingly, it took a while to for those who actually took part to start fighting with any enthusiasm. No one wanted to fire at those they had just bonded with.

  2. I’ve read and heard this stories so many times, but I still listen to every version. It’s a story I never tire of. IMO, WWI was even more brutal than WWII. Every version I’ve heard was the Germans making the first gesture.
