@unsaved6 There was not even a real civil war. Russia was heavily involved in polarizing Ukrainian politics in a bid to get a pro-Russian ruling coalition elected and when they could see their favored candidate was still going to lose they even tried to assassinate presidential candidate and future president Viktor Yushchenko. He was poisoned, almost died and his face was left looking like it had been dipped in acid.
When Yanukovych was kicked out of office, they sent the FSB, led by Girkin, to capture government buildings in Donetsk and Luhansk and pretend it was a pro-Russian Ukrainian uprising. When they failed to get support they told people in Donetsk that the Ukrainian army was coming to massacre them. Afraid of this, some gave some lukewarm lip service to the breakaway idea, but when it became clear Ukraine wasn’t coming to massacre them and the FSB’s handful of collaborators had no idea how to run a state, their support collapsed.
At that point, Russia’s only option to retain de facto control of the Donbas was to launch a war which would force residents to either flee, stay silent and/or get on board and support them. Once Russia forced Ukraine to return fire it was inevitable at that point an actual armed conflict that finally included more than a handful of ultra-right, pro-Russians would evolve. And the rest is history.
