I was just about to say imagine being that in that thing for 20 hours, but you made that point even better. Getting picked for that assignment must have at first seemed like you’d scored a great, important role and then after your first flight, you’d be hysterically weeping.

You have to draw the line somewhere… You know, like $2b per unit.

Imagine ordering 500+ jets when you didn’t even have a dozen pilots. Genius move. As for the F-104, no one can deny it might be the most dangerous jet ever. Fast as hell though.

Aside from the MiG-21, this era of Soviet interceptors and fighters all look like a nightmare to fly.
4
That is quite interesting. It’s also slightly surprising considering there were only 149 made. But maybe not considering France was one of only two European states with nukes.

Also, as we’ve seen, both Russia and the Soviets showed time and again their inability to do complicated sorties let alone complicated multi-ship sorties. Pilots trained to operate according to ground based commanders do not fare well in complicated, messy environments.

He’s had a lot of great stuff, but of all his videos, this one has the most flaws in terms of the theory (the technical historical aspect is excellent). As we’ve seen, both Russia and their Soviet predecessors have showed time and again an inability to do complicated sorties let alone complicated multi-ship sorties that require independent initiative. Pilots trained to and used to operating via highly regimented ground based commanders do not fare well in complicated, messy environments let alone against air forces designed to do exactly that. Also, Saab has produced jets for decades designed to take off from almost anywhere with extreme resistance to FOD. I’ll give him a break on this topic though as Sweden wasn’t part of NATO during this theoretical scenario.

Even if we assumed no MiG-29 peer, we’ve seen both Russia + their Soviet predecessors showing time & again an inability to execute complicated sorties let alone complicated multi-ship sorties requiring independent initiative. The current North Korean AF is even more interesting. It’s got such an insane variety of planes.
2
18:45 - Northrop’s entry looked pretty badass.
2
@traviswalker8933 Building a runway decent enough for a rugged airplane to take off from doesn’t exactly require advanced expertise. It sounds like a case of incredible disorganization.
2
How did the first pilot’s not violently hit the canopy if it didn’t detach? The other question is, how many pilots have drowned or otherwise perished in aircraft w/ejection seats after surviving a water crash?
1
@MelekMA Yep, one only needs to read about what was found in Sednaya prison after Bashar was overthrown to understand just petty, psychotic and cruel this family was. 100,000+ political prisoners alone.
1
Wish that was getting more views. There are plenty of videos on things like the Super Sabre and not enough on fascinating aircrafts/projects like this.
1
Doctrine didn’t begin to change. In fact, it’s never changed. The doctrinal use of LO aircraft paired with AWACS, bombers, 4th gen, etc. differs in no way from hot air balloons and zeppelins.
1
PRC pilots haven’t improved much since . It’s absolutely amazing the PRC didn’t just buy some slower attack craft or even simply build some STOL aircraft themselves.
1
He designed the Osprey?
1
Johnson is famous for having clashed with brass and politicians because he wouldn’t humor them when they had stupid ideas.
1
@ Thanks for the further info. That makes a lot of sense when one takes a step back.
1
9:31 did that guy just walk upside down out of an AWACS in mid-flight?
1
How could a refrigerator even produce a signal a radar would detect?
1
Another great episode. Just a suggestion if I may. I’d love to see you cover North Korea’s current fleet. It’s full of such an insane variation from planes in all areas from utterly ancient to 4th generation fighters.

Every Russian jet, prior to getting British jet engines, was doomed to failure from the outset. Ed Nash has a video that is a very good complement to this video.
1
What did he mean by the Wildcat’s “single roof float”? 3:10

Taste in aircraft is so diverse. Can’t stand the F-101 (though ironically I love the F-111 and that isn’t too different), but I think the F-104’s flying dart, rocket age look is very cool. Also cool to know it set all sorts of altitude records. I love the look of the old Double Ugly.
1
This is exactly what the Gripen does, but much better (they can be stationed anywhere, take off from roads with lots of FOD and can be armed and fueled using only hand tools and novice mechanics).
1
Please make a video about the other makes of these aero sleds. I loved this video.

There were Nazis everywhere at senior levels in the West German government. Unfortunately, it would have been impossible to have run that country without any guilty men.
1
Flying a P-61 must have made its pilots feel about as invulnerable as a pilot could get in WWII.
1
“$100k contract to develop a fighter compatible radar warning receiver, missile launch detector and radar intercept receiver + associated displays and controls. It came in on time and on budget.” The DoD would pay $400m for the same thing today.
1
The Fury just looked useless and obsolete even at the time.
1
That little Thai guy was a badass. Also, it’s a good example of how effective small arms fire can be against extremely slow aircraft.
1
I’d translate “tricky but fun” as agile enough to be fun but unforgiving to mistakes and prone to bite. So, not a nightmare, but not an easy plane. Fun makes me think Yak-130. I want to fly that thing so badly.
1
@ Indeed, but it was effective and economical. It is a bit like the primitive F-16 of its time. And was not plagued with half baked attempts to emulate Western aircraft like so many other Soviet jets.

Erdogan is trying to bring them/it back. So, this might not hold true forever.
1
@old_guard2431 What is the relevance between this and OP?
1
The Vautour I must be the worst looking jet of all time. The Vatour II was a huge improvement both in form and function.
1
@ I agree with you. A detailed breakdown of the known facts are much more valuable than a theoretical analysis or summary, which most of the time are self-evident to anyone even vaguely familiar with the subject matter.
1
@soonerfrac4611 Having this view means you don’t understand the F-35’s role or how actual missions employing the F-35 would be configured. I will be shocked if during the entire course of its future, an F-35 EVER actually ends up using let alone needin its gun in an engagement with a peer enemy (or near-peer since there truly are no peers).
1
Seems like another desperate attempt to give the East credit for something it didn’t do or conceive of.
1
I need one of these.

@traviswalker8933 I appreciate that, but let’s be honest, labor was extremely cheap at that time in Syria. Had there simply been some decent administrators in the air force or government, it could have gotten done.
