It is for Putin because they don’t want a successful democracy to undermine their own regime. If Russians see you can have both freedom and prosperity then they’ll wonder what the need for Putin is. If they were so worried about NATO, they wouldn’t have stripped their entire border next to Finland of troops, air defense, etc. It’s also inaccurate to say “It’s an extremely important piece of territory that both want to keep in its sphere of influence.” It is for Russia, but if it were so important to the West they would have armed Ukraine BEFORE the war and not after. They would have also made it a priority in trade.
