@chrisnieto5547 No, but skinning alive was not common and most of the worst stories were just that stories. Stories made to whip up anger and fury in order to attract military and public aid in clearing an area of natives. The Comanche, and to a lesser extent, the Apache were quite unique in how cruelty they treated captured soldiers and civilians. Their practices were not common among most tribes, which is why almost all tribes, even the Apache, were utterly terrified of the Comanche.

BTW, while it doesn’t really make much different, the Matilda Lockhardt story is known to be apocryphal. She was in bad shape, but nowhere near what the stories portray.

They were just as brutal as the Europeans in their midst. The only problem is the “hippie Indian” image that was created long, long before Hollywood ever existed. Blaming everything on “Hollywood” is a reflection of slow, uneducated mind.
