That or they’ve told them what they’ll do to their friends and families being held in prison if they don’t toe the line the FSB has given them. Another sensible motivation is they’re already planning runs for office when VP falls and want to show Russians how they were trying to help their situation when they get back.

The US needs to stop getting in the way of Sweden giving Gripens. Nothing the US will allow to be given will make anything close to the difference the Gripen would be, especially due to their ease of use, including simplicity of routine service, ability to land just about anywhere, maintenance, etc. It also has amazing ordnance options, especially the METEOR. Due to fears of a conflict with China, the US won’t allow any newer, long range missile to fall in the hands of Russia for fear China will get a hold of the tech which would make it much easier for them to defend against those missiles in the event of a war.

@laars0001 I meant to imply that the very real possibility he was saying those things for domestic political reasons is an example that we shouldn’t expect Russians who are actually looking to get into office to have viewpoints we love. Navalny was sainted by the press after his death, but even he was far from some shining ideal. But he was an actual politician and not like a dreamer with no chance. So, I don’t blame him for adjusting to the reality of the Russian public. It does no good if someone publicly states all the perfect views, but has no support in Russia and therefore can’t make any changes.

@jasonk6321 It wasn’t up to America. It was up to Germany who had the majority of the traded prisoners. And we got back our Americans. So, for us, it was a good trade.

Likeliest reasons for these 🇷🇺 ex-prisoners’ narratives are a) the FSB told them what they’ll do to friends + fam being held if they don’t toe the line b) these opp leaders are already planning their runs for office when VP falls and want to show Russians how they were trying to help their situation when they get back. And, like it or not, even most of Putin’s opponents have an imperialist mindset too. They’d just be unlikely to actually do something like invade Ukraine.
