@MXB2001 Unless they were unlucky enough to hit some concentrated piece of debris, it is nearly impossible any of them are dead and most likely none of them will die, but rather have an exponentially higher chance of developing cancer in the coming 10+ years. None would be dead now because even exposure to lethal doses of radiation has a very delayed effect before you start to die due to how the half life of radiation works. Even most of the first responders (back in 86) who responded to the initial meltdown and were exposed to chunks of graphite from the core took months to die. And no one digging in the exclusion zone is likely to have encountered radiation even close to as high as those men did. Regardless, I think we can all agree what happened is symbolic of what a shambolic mess the Russian army is and the type of conscripts in their army (recruits from backwaters where half the people are illiterate and literally don’t have running water or indoor plumbing).

@mattdreyer9086 Not trained and just yesterday, on Russian state TV itself, an expert said our existing/potential new conscripts are useless because they have no desire to fight and little or no training. And they don’t have as many as you think to recruit from since Putin purposely does not conscript men from major cities because he fears that could lead to riots in places big enough to actually take him down.

@R Sarabin I wasn’t arguing they wouldn’t be ill or get radiation burns, which is survivable. Only that is highly unlikely any have died in such a short period, which is exactly what they were saying.
