  9. Iranians who lived in Iran prior to the 1979 revolution were generally living in a secular state where religion took a back seat to economics and politics. The revolution flipped the script overnight and even people who were living their normal lives were suddenly criminalized by the state. The backlash was that emigres dumped everything from that time-religion, clothing, literature and even family. They kept the language and cuisine but otherwise just dumped it all.
