This United situation was the same as Arsenal when Raul Sanlehi was at the club- transfers dictated by agents, hype over substance, high risk signings (Pepe = Sancho) from overseas, a captain who didn't give a toss (Aubameyang =Maguire) a top scorer in France who forgot his skills (Lacazette =Cavani). Richard Arnold is not Edu though, which is why Arsenal have done rather good buying the last 2 seasons and developed their youth into internationals .Heck even the women's team is top notch. United by comparison have let go of Lingard, Chowdry ,Chong,Garner and Henderson just to placate the whiny Gary Neville like Egoes of McTominay, Fred , Wan-Bissaka and Shaw who honestly need to take up another sport or retire now and be pundits.
