  1. it does not help that characters introduce themselves in bombastic manner- instead of "I am Liu Bei" he will say something like "I am Liu Bei, eldest brother of the three, member of the Han royal court, restorer of the Emperor's rights, holder of the jade pen, sweeper of the floor....."

  2.  @weirdofromhalo  Mandarin as we know it is only dated from the 1950s, the language used in the Jin ,Yuan and Ming is still different, being more literary and flowery. The Four Classics have been written in that Chinese but now recited in formal modern Mandarin.

  3. the "Shu" kingdom was actually "Shu Han" which meant "New Han", as Liu Bei originally wanted to keep the Han Emperor free of Cao Cao's influence but later crowned himself an emperor claimant.
