  1. the Witcher is successful as a book and video game series (not so much a TV series) because it is based in Polish and Slavic folklore rather than typical chivalric heroic fiction. Russian and Lithuanian fairy tales are frightening as well. Even Djed Mraz (Santa Claus in Croatia) is accompanied by Krampus, who kidnaps bad children.
